February half term in a nutshell

Things to do this Half Term at WWT Washington Wetland Centre

Spring may not have sprung just yet… but as part of our Big Hideout at WWT Washington, we have lots of fun activities to entertain the whole family this February half term! So grab your wellies and join us for some outdoor activities from arts and crafts to bird watching and beyond!

Here’s some inspiration for things to do when you visit:

Birdy Bingo

A fun family activity for all ages, why not pick up one of our Birdy Bingo activity sheets and see how many species you can spot from our collection and wild reserve? Whether you’re a beginner with binoculars or a seasoned spotter, it’s the perfect time to step into our hides, wetlands and woodlands and discover something new.

Beginners Bird watching

Feel the excitement of learning a new skill as you join our reserve team in one of our wildlife viewing hides and find how to get started with bird watching. Spot a host of wetland and woodland wildlife, learn tips to help you ID different species and put it straight into practise. We love introducing the next generation to nature and conservation and this is the perfect opportunity for anyone looking for a new hobby to chat to our team. It's also a great chance to start your own bird list!

Saturday 17 February - Hawthorn Wood hide

Saturday 24 February - Diageo hide

Explore your creative side

Enjoy a variety of creative crafts and art workshops this half term. We've got clay crafts in the woods, swan crafts with origami in Lagoon View hide (what a view that will be!!) and an air-dry clay workshop, all included as part of admission. So whether you enjoy getting your hands dirty, or favour the a more delicate paper folding approach, there's something for everyone!

Get hands-on with sensory activities

Nature is full of sights, sounds and textures that offer a fantastic sensory experience. We have a variety of activities to take part in that will explore your senses as you learn a little more about nature. Think a mini walk and game of iSpy in Close Encounters, touch micro tables with all sorts of natural goodies to feel, such as pine cones, catkins, lichen and more. Plus enjoy some time with our keeper in Ganderland and get hands-on with different textures as you search for 'food' in sand and water. A great activity for all of the family to enjoy!

Grey Heron

Our heron hedges are getting busy as their breeding season kicks into life! It's well worth taking a look from the hides on Wader Lake. Diageo hide and Paddy Fleming have the best views of these majestic birds. Watch as they jostle for space in the trees, find sticks to repair nests and patrol the shorelines of the lakes. It's a sight you don't want to miss (and there may be some of your Birdy Bingo birds to tick off down there too *wink wink*)
