Wader Lake and Prince's Trust hide timeline

We’re pleased the desilting project on Wader Lake has reached a third phase which is working in front of Paddy Fleming hide to remove the silt and deepen the lake.

We wanted to give you an update on our timeline for this work and for the rest of the year, including an update on the Prince’s Trust hide.

w/c 25 September

We are finishing the main desilting work (on approx. Thursday - weather dependant). Foundations for the sand martin bank are being laid by an external contractor on Wednesday and Thursday (27/28 Sept).

w/c 2 October

The external contractor is returning on Monday 2 October to complete the build of the sand martin bank, which is expected to take approximately 4-5 days (weather dependent). Read more about our sand martin bank and the current works on Wader Lake.

w/c 9 October to end of 2023

Following the works by external contractors, our reserve team use this opportunity to do vegetation management around all hides, shorelines, and islands of the lake.

Prince’s Trust hide update

As part of the ongoing work around Wader Lake, our reserve team will build a temporary structure (either a lean-to or viewing screen) to give visitors the opportunity to view wildlife at this east side of the lake. This will be in place by the end of the year – an exact date is to be confirmed as this is dependent on when our time-sensitive work is completed.

2024

The current foundations of the old Prince’s Trust hide are very small and will need surveyed and the area extended for a more permanent structure to be sited. We don’t know exactly what that permanent structure will look like and, at the moment we don’t have a finalisation date as there is a lengthy process for fundraising and planning before it can be executed.

Our team have a small window of opportunity to complete essential work each year after the breeding season (September) and before the grey heron population return (January) and begin scoping for nests in the heron hedges. We’re incredibly grateful for your patience and support as we complete these works and we will update as soon as we can with any further developments!
