Local group bake flora and fauna cakes to share at WWT Welney!
Visitors to WWT Welney today might have noticed something a little out of the usual as the centre played host to a meeting of the Clandestine Cake Club!
WWT Welney was delighted when the local branch of this secret cake club decided to use them as a location for one of their meetings. Members of the club from the Downham Market area were issued with a theme – Flora or Fauna – and only told the location within days of the meeting. The challenge was then to plan and make a cake which fitted the theme to bring along and share with the group. Entries included a Hummingbird cake by group leader Marie-Anne Crawley, a chocolate and honey beehive cake and a lemon meringue barn owl cake.
Emma Brand, Events & Marketing Officer for WWT Welney says:
‘Having arranged for the Clandestine Cake Club to hold a meeting here at WWT Welney we were interested to see how many people would think of our wetlands when planning their cakes.
‘Although we are most famous for the thousands of swans and ducks that visit Welney in the winter; spring as equally inspiring in terms of wildlife.
‘Hundreds of birds moving North for the summer include the swallows and yellow wagtails migrating from Africa, the wetland wildflowers coming into bloom and insects emerging in the warming summer sun.’
The Clandestine Cake Club is growing in popularity alongside the growing interest in baking across the country. There is just one rule for baking with this group, it’s all about cake! Participants cannot make cupcakes, muffins, brownies, pies or tarts and once the meeting is over the best part is that they get to take any uneaten cake home to enjoy.
More information about the Club and how to become a member can be found at – http://clandestinecakeclub.co.uk/groups/downham-market/. The group who have visited Welney cover Downham Market and the surrounding areas and are always pleased to see new faces at their meetings.
WWT Welney are open daily, 9.30am – 5pm in the summer and are currently enjoying the results of warmer weather bringing new life out on the reserve as breeding birds start to display, insects emerge into the spring air and wetland mammals come out of winter hiding.
WWT Welney is a great place to bring the family on a day out and as the Clandestine Cake Club have found there are benefits to bringing groups for a visit with reduced entry, informative greeting and guided walks available (groups are counted as 12 or more people visiting together).
