Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS Count) 21 February 2022

Here are the totals of all species of bird seen on Monday 21 February at WWT Welney.

Swan numbers are down across the Washes during the day due to their feeding on the grasses in the fields, building up that protein ready for the migration home. However, 69 species seen overall including lovely sightings of goldeneye; kittiwake amongst the roosting gulls; and short-eared owl being ambushed by lesser black-backs in front of the main hide as the sun went down. Water levels have increased over the past couple days which means rafts of tufted ducks and the goldeneye may be easier to see now - and possibly moving to the pools in front of the hides (Lyle Hide), rather than just being at the far side of the reserve.

List in order of first seen.
