Record count of Whooper Swan.

A dusk count of Whooper Swan produced an average of 2480 birds. The highest previous count was 2100 in 2010. Interesting to note that many of the previous high counts have occurred during cold snaps which seem to encourage birds which roost elsewhere to visit  Martin Mere.

Green-winged Teal on Top Mere mid afternoon with 1630 Eurasian Teal. Assorted counts produced 11,600 Pink-footed Geese including two 'pied' individuals. A good count of 920 Common Shelduck, 265 Wigeon, 840 Coot and 12 Shoveler.

A female, or more likely 'the' female Ferruginous x Pochard hybrid has returned once more, floating in front of the in focus shop. As mentioned here in previous years this bird maybe the offspring of the visiting male Ferruginous Duck which wintered on the reserve with Pochard in the mid 00's.

Sixty two Ruff mostly around the Mere.
