Caerlaverock observatory demolished after 42 years

WWT Caerlaverock has seen quite a change this month with the demolition of the old observatory after 42 years of faithful service to make way for a brand new multi-level viewing hide.

The new Sir Peter Scott hide, which will open later this year, has been designed to give unparalleled views of wildlife events such as wild swan feeds in the winter months.

It will be multi-level, with a tower and a lift to each level. It will also feature an exhibition space and learning room (and, importantly, extremely comfy seating!).

The rest of the reserve and facilities are open as normal while the building work is taking place and our summer meadow walk has been opened early.

Destruction of the old hide was captured on camera below. We'll keep you updated on the progress and plans for the new hide over the coming months.

The new Sir Peter Scott Observatory is being generously part-funded by the Scottish Government and the European Community, Dumfries and Galloway LEADER 2007 – 2013 programme.
