Counting Cattle Egrets

A nice surprise this morning with nine Cattle Egret on the South Lake

A nice surprise this morning with nine Cattle Egret on the South Lake. The birds flew towards the roadside fields just before 10am and may drop in with the cattle here near the canal.

South Lake
Shortly after the Cattle Egret departed the Black-tailed Godwit flock (400+ birds) rocketed back in from the Tack Piece. They rejoined a few Lapwing and Dunlin on the wader scrape. The juvenile Great Crested Grebe appears to be looking to spend the winter with us, an unusual species to see here in December. Also on the deep lake were several Tufted Duck and 37 Pochard (1 female). A Grey Heron was prowling the tree line.

Rushy Hide / Peng Observatory
A total of 63 Bewick's Swans on site again today, most being on the Rushy for the morning feed.

Estuary Tower
The water levels have shot up on the Tack Piece and thousands of birds are here to enjoy. The Golden Plover flock arrived on mass around 9am and now numbers around 3000 birds. Combined with several thousand Lapwing, Teal, Wigeon, Pintail, Curlew, Shoveler, Dunlin and Black-tailed Godwit it is a great sight.
