Last chance for Summer Walkway

We've got some good tides this week, and this morning's produced a great roost of waders and other birds - but you don't have long to experience it from Middle Point

We've got some good tides this week, up to around 9.4m in height. This morning's high tide produced a great roost of waders and other birds, but you don't have long left to experience it from Middle Point as the Summer Walkway closes at the end of the month.

The Collared Pratincole was refound around 9:30am at the South Lake Discovery Hide. Keep up to date on sightings new throughout the day via our Twitter feed here.


Middle Point
Around 350 Dunlin were buzzing along the riverbank, settling occasionally. With them were, four Ringed Plover, two Bar-tailed Godwit, a Knot, two Golden Plover and a great count of 68 Grey Plover. The Curlew roost was smaller than normal with only 100 birds present. Also of note were 17 Little Egret, 28 Great Black-backed Gull, three Grey Heron and the Shelduck flock. A Rock Pipit was with a flock of Meadow Pipit along the riverbank close to the end of the walkway this morning.

Estuary Tower
The flock of 26 White-fronted Geese were on the Dumbles towards the south end this morning, before moving to the Top New Piece giving closer views from the Zeiss Hide.

Zeiss Hide
Six Ruff were with the Lapwing flock this morning, which itself numbered 335 birds. A Great Egret dropped in, and a Marsh Harrier flew through.

Kingfisher Hide
At least 17 Ruff and a few Dunlin were with the Lapwing on the Bottom New Piece.

South Lake
The Collared Pratincole was refound here around 9:30am this morning, spending some time sat on the causeway and flying around feeding. Also of note were 199 Black-tailed Godwit, 18 Shelduck, 133 Shoveler, a Ruff and eight Pochard.

Robbie Garnett Hide
A Garganey was on the island with the Teal this morning. Along the shoreline were five Spotted Redshank, two Redshank and 291 Wigeon across the Tack Piece. The Dunlin flock also dropped in here for a brief time during high tide.

Rushy Hide
Two Curlew Sandpiper and two Little Stint were mixed in with a flock of 284 Dunlin on the upper pond island this morning, but were very flighty and also dropped in on the Tack Piece next door. Also noted on the Rushy this morning were a Green Sandpiper, two Redshank and 24 Shelduck.
