New Years Bird Race

The New Year Bird Race was great fun, sadly not many people took. During the day I personally managed 62 species, but sadly was beaten on the day by a total of 65 species by WWT member Gordon Youdale who walked away with a copy of Best Bird watching Sites in Solway by John Miles. In third place totals of 52 were achieved.

To get over 60 species in a day here at Caerlaverock is a very good achievement as the usual annual list is only around 140. This means that the winning total of 65 species is 46% of the annual total usually had at Caerlaverock.

Congratulations on your win Gordon.

Whooper Swans

Numbers are very good at the moment (not as high as usual) with counts of 150 regularly coming in for the feeds.

Barnacle Goose

The latest Barnacle Goose counts from the tower was lower than usual at 4,600.

Green-winged Teal

We currently have two Green-winged Teals on the reserve at the moment and show well on the Folly Pond.
