Latest Sightings
It has been a busy few days with a lot of comings and goings on site. The red breasted goose is still present and can be seen from the hides on the mere. The mere has also been a good place to see waders with black-tailed godwit, ruff and redshank reported as well as an unconfirmed report of 2 golden plover amongst the flocks of lapwing.
Ron Barker hide continues to be good for raptors with marsh harrier, hen harrier and peregrine all reported over multiple days as well as barn owl seen in the early morning and late afternoon. Water rail has also been sighted at Ron Barker as well as Kingfisher hide.
The longhorn cattle have been moved out of Long Meadow and into Woodend Marsh and have been rejoined again by the cattle egrets that decided to take a Christmas break from Martin Mere. Numbers over the past few days have varied from about 6-10 individuals.
For those looking for a couple of ticks on their year list as well the sewage works are a good place to see both chiffchaff and Siberian chiffchaff with 2 of the latter being seen on multiple days feeding on insects amongst the gravel between the two settling tanks.
