Light winds, sunshine and a frosty start make for perfect winter birding conditions.

1000's of birds on the Mere this morning

A few counts just on the Mere produced 580 Shelduck, 470 Wigeon, 490 Teal, 220 Pintail, 40+ Pochard, 40+ Tufted Duck and the arrival of two more Goldeneye including an adult male.

This drake Goldeneye arrived today.

On the wader front at least 80 Black-tailed Godwit were new in. Over 700 Lapwing scattered around the reserve, 60+ Ruff, some Snipe and recently a single Redshank.

Regular Barn Owl, up to 3 seen in the late afternoons and sometimes in the morning. At least 4 Marsh Harrier visiting the reserve, 3+ Buzzard, Peregrine, 2 Kestrel, 2 Sparrowhawk and recently male Merlin.

Just off the reserve along Curlew Lane 20+ Fieldfare this morning.
