Latest Sightings

After Saturday's brutal rain swept chill Sunday started in sunshine and light winds.

A few small groups of Pink-footed Geese coming onto the reserve today. These are always worth looking through as locally a few European White-fronted Geese have recently arrived so may end up with pinks.

On the raptor front at least 3 Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 3+ Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Water Rails in front of and to the right of the Ron Barker Hide. A Water Vole was also seen on Pump House Sluice in front of the Ron Barker Hide.

The usual waders with a few more Black-tailed Godwit (40+), 700+ Lapwing, 50+ Ruff, 10+ Snipe and a single Redshank.

Redshank behind the Ruff. The scally upper parts on Ruff are a dead give away.

The Mere was packed with wildfowl as usual. The only regular species missing is Gadwall and generally, like Shoveler there will only be a handful on site at this time of year.

This newly arrived drake Goldeneye can show well in front of the Discovery Hide.

Check out a few days of the previous sighting to get a fuller picture as to what can be seen on the reserve.

It should be possible to see over 60 species in a full days bird watching at Martin Mere. If you would like to know the best spots, up to date info or to report any sightings then please call in at the in focus shop next to the Discovery Hide.
