Lesser Yellowlegs on South Lake

A nice surprise this morning with a Lesser Yellowlegs found on the South Lake

A nice surprise this morning with a Lesser Yellowlegs found on the South Lake. This North American wader was amongst the small wader flock, before flying off calling and then reappeared here half an hour later, showing even better.

The bird was first found at 9:30am and once identification was confirmed it flew off but returned by 10am. It showed briefly very well in front of the hide and then flew towards the back of the wader scrape and was again lost to view. Our volunteer team are covering the reserve to relocate the bird.

Update: the Lesser Yellowlegs was relocated on the Top New Piece this afternoon, viewable from the Zeiss Hide.

There were at least 235 Curlew in main roost this morning including five colour ringed birds - four from the WWT head-start project in 2019 and another colour-ring combination. Also here were five juvenile Bar-tailed Godwit and two juvenile Knot, 14 Little Egret and 22 Great Black-backed Gulls. A large flock of mixed small waders (mainly Dunlin and Ringed Plover) roosted here too, with another small flock flying across river to Awre.
South Lake
Before we got distracted by our North American visitor the two juvenile Spotted Redshank and four Curlew Sandpiper were noted on the wader scrape. Also present were a small number of Dunlin, Redshank, Ruff and six Avocet, with 100+ Black-tailed Godwit.
