New nene goslings at WWT Arundel
On March 18 four nene (Hawaiian) goslings hatched at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre, the first goslings born on the reserve this spring. The four grey goslings and their parents have been moved into the outdoor duckery to protect the rare geese from recent cold weather and from predators. Wild mallard ducklings are also emerging across the reserve while coots and moor hens are sitting on eggs clutches that are soon to hatch. Spring is in the air and it’s time to watch the wetlands awakening! Spring is a time for New Life across WWT Arundel Wetland Centre’s reserve as cygnets, goslings and ducklings hatch from their shells and dragonflies, reptiles and butterflies emerge. “The cold weather has slowed down some species but spring is definitely in the air” says WWT Arundel reserve warden Paul Stevens.
Visit WWT Arundel Wetland Centre during the Easter holidays to celebrate New Life from March 29-April 14. Watch the wetlands awakening from a boat in the reedbeds or spot the signs of new life as birds are displaying and nesting near the wildlife hides and along every trail. Visit the Pond Explorer to find dragonfly nymphs and emerging newts, appearing in your pond dipping net! Families can follow the clues to find giant bunnies, create seasonal crafts each afternoon and watch special performances from the Arundel Youth Theatre each Wednesday of the Easter holiday.
