Recent sightings - 1st May

The following sightings were recorded today by Toni Castello, warden, at low tide, and under a sunny, warm and calm day.

Estuary

Oystercatcher 40, Black-tailed godwit 15, Shelduck 25, Lesser Black-backed gull 1, Black-headed gull 150.

Main lake - visible from Sensory garden and Visitor centre

Mallard 40, Tufted duck 8, Pintail 1, Gadwall 2, Little grebe 1, Black-headed gull 110.

Wadermarsh - visible from Wadermarsh lookout and Brent Hide

Black-headed gull 97, Shelduck 4, Gadwall 2, Oystercatcher 1. High tides are still bringing good numbers of Black-tailed godwit, and our wader marsh is revealing as a definitely notable place to obtain very close observations of these astonishing birds:

Freshwater Lagoon - visible from Brent Hide and Crannog

Black-headed gull +300, Tufted duck 11, Mallard 5, Common gull 1, Coot 1.

Saline Lagoon - visible from the Saline Lagoon lookout and Limekiln observatory

Greylag 2, Gadwall 2, Black-headed gull 8, Mallard 3. We've had an unusual sighting of a solitary immature Brent goose in one of the islands. Relatively good numbers of Brent geese, ranging for several dozens to several hundreds, seem to have stayed for quite a long time after the winter, and probably a change towards better weather conditions will determine a strong reduction in numbers in the following days.

Limestone Lake - Visible from the Limestone Pavillion and the Woodland lookout

Tufted duck 2, Mute swan 2.

Brick works

Long-tailed tit 2, Goldfinch 4, Dunnock 1, Chaffinch 1.

Peninsula Marsh - visible from the Peninsula Marsh lookout and Limekiln observatory

Black-headed gull 3, Reed bunting 1.

Woodland

Songthrush 1, Coal tit 1, Chaffinch 2, Goldfinch 2, Blackcap 1, Robin 4, Wren 2, Orange tip butterfly 2.
