Recent Sightings - 20th May 2019

The appearance of baby chicks on the reserve is well underway with the Black-headed gulls, Shelduck and Graylag all with young.

The following sightings were recorded today from the reserve at Castle Espie. The weather has been fairly good lately and there has been some interest from visiting terns in our tern raft.

Estuary - visible from the Brent Hide and the Limekiln Observatory

Black-headed Gull 8, Lesser black-backed gull 2, Little egret 2.

Main lake - visible from Sensory garden and Visitor centre

Mallard 12, Graylag goose 6, Tufted 4, Moorhen 2, Black-headed gull 83, Coot 2

Wadermarsh - visible from Wadermarsh lookout and Brent Hide

Black-headed gull 11, Shelduck 2

Freshwater Lagoon - visible from Brent Hide and Crannog

Tufted duck 6, Mallard 12, Coot 2, Black-headed gull 200+, Shelduck 11

Saline Lagoon - visible from Limekiln observatory

Common tern 1, Gadwall 2, Meadow pipit 1

Jackdaw 2, Goldfinch 1

Limestone Lake

Swallow 1, Little grebe 1

Blackbird, Wren, Magpie, Dunnock, Robin, House sparrow, Willow warbler, Mistle Thrush, Great tit, Blue tit, Goldfinch, Chaffinch

We have also had a few spots of Holly Blue butterfly around the reserve lately
