Recent sightings - 5th February
The following sightings were recorded today by Toni Castello, warden, at low tide.
Estuary
Black-tailed godwit 100, Oystercatcher 150, Curlew 30, Redshank 40, Shelduck 150, Redshank 40, Brent geese 70, Wigeon 7, Shoveler 8, Teal 3, Greater black-backed gull 1, Black-headed gull 48, Little egret 1.
Main lake - visible from Sensory garden and Visitor centre
Mallard 200, Black-headed gull 3, Mute swan 1, Tufted duck 22, Gadwall 7, Shoveler 1, Coot 4, Grey heron 1.
Wadermarsh - visible from Wadermarsh lookout and Brent Hide
Oystercatcher 1, Black-tailed godwit 3, Teal 10, Mute swan 1.
Freshwater Lagoon - visible from Brent Hide and Crannog
Mallard 15, Coot 4, Tufted 2, Wren 1, Robin 1. A Water rail has been spotted several times during the last two weeks, feeding in the grass bank on the right of the Crannog.
Saline Lagoon - visible from Limekiln observatory
Little grebe 2.
Limestone Lake
Teal 2, Mallard 15, Little grebe 1.
Brickworks
Tree sparrow 2, Goldfinch 3, Coal tit 1, Great tit 1, Blue tit 2, Wren 1, Robin 1, Meadow pipit 1, Mistle thrush 1, Dunnock 1.
Woodland
Coal tit 2, Great tit 1, Wren 1, Goldfinch 1, Blue tit 1. The increase in daylight hours is having its effect on the most of these birds, which have increased their singing activity, and even started to defend territories. Everything is getting ready for the spring!
