Sponsor a ‘Lard Log’ to feed winter birds
WWT Arundel Wetland Centre wants to install ‘lard logs’ onsite to provide vital calories for birds during the winter months. These free-standing posts are drilled with dozens of holes then WWT staff fills the holes with lard for the birds to eat. The cost of creating and installing a log and stocking it with lard all winter is £250.
WWT Arundel Centre Manager Olivia Iles said: “We hope that a local business or bird lovers may want to sponsor a lard log for the winter. Extra calories in cold weather are crucial for the bird’s diet and a very cold winter is rumoured to be on the way.”
Recently, fisherman reported that thousands of garden birds migrating to the UK from Scandinavia have been dying over the ocean when hit by fog and high winds. It is vital that surviving migrating birds have enough food to survive what could be a tough winter in the UK.
Arundel Wetland Centre would like to install four lard logs this winter. A sign with the log sponsor’s name would be placed near each one, visible to visitors at the wetland reserve. Call Olivia Iles at 01903 881523 if you would like to sponsor a lard log.
