Today's sightings

Another busy high tide this lunchtime with a nice selection of birds coming in to the Top New Piece to roost, viewed from the Zeiss Hide.

Another busy high tide this lunchtime with a nice selection of birds coming in to the Top New Piece to roost, viewed from the Zeiss Hide, bringing us to 17 species of wader on the reserve today. A single Swift was seen over the Decoy, possibly one of the last of the summer?

Zeiss Hide
Bird over the high tide roost included a Spoonbill, Little Stint, 2 Knot, 16 Avocet, 3 Sanderling, 47 Lapwing, a Black-tailed Godwit, 10 Ringed Plover, a Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Snipe and a Greenshank. A pair of Cranes were in the Bottom New Piece field, with another 6 in flight over the hide before landing on the Dumbles. Three Roe Deer were also seen in the Bottom New Piece and a Green Woodpecker flew past the hide. The first juvenile Common Gull was also seen along with an adult.

South Lake
There were 304 Black-tailed Godwit on the wader scrape this morning which included 2 juveniles. Also counted were 12 Ruff, 45 Redshank, 16 Lapwing, 22 Teal, an adult Little-ringed Plover with chick and another juvenile and a Common Sandpiper. A Little Grebe was on the deep lake.

Rushy Hide
At least 11 Green Sandpiper were on the lower pond this morning along with 14 Lapwing and 3 Snipe.
