Top Tips for Summer
Exploring our wetlands during the summer is exciting at the best of times, but plan your day out alongside some of our fun hands-on activities and make your visit a great one!
Here's our top tips for things you can get involved in:
Postcard trail
Self-led | daily
Pick up a trail guide and search our site for Pelican Postie's missing postcards. With quirky stories and tales from around the globe, the fun illustrated characters will guide families around our wetlands, learning loads of cool stuff as you go.
Pond dipping
Staff-led book at the admissions desk | Daily through Sept 1
Join us at the Raised Pond and enjoy searching for all manner of pond creatures big and small! This interactive activity is always popular with families and is a great way to introduce kids to the interesting underwater world. They'll use nets and magnifying glasses to search for things like flat worms, caddisfly larvae, water boatman and many more, using ID guides to help them figure out what wildlife they've found!
Crafts
Staff-led | Mon - Fri 1.30-3.30 pm
Get crafty from 1.30-3.30, Mondays-Fridays this summer at free, drop-in crafts at the Outlook In building. Make a mini matchbox story, a wetlands stamp or design a postcard. There's also lots of colouring and activity sheets to try.
We'd love to hear from you about your day so drop us a line on special post cards, and in the visitor center telling us about your day.
Boat Safaris
Staff-led | Various times
The Wetland Discovery Boat Safari is a twenty-minute guided trip on a quiet electric boat through beautiful wetland habitats full of seasonal wildlife. Along the way your guide will identify and help you spot the wetland wildlife and plant life. Book your boat safari tickets from our admission desk on the day of your visit. Boat safari is an additional £3 per person.
Keeper talks
Staff-led | noon & 2 pm daily
Our daily Diving Duck and Pelican talks are included in your admission price and are on daily. Visit the Coastal Creek aviary at noon to meet the sea ducks and watch them dive for whitebait in their cut-away diving tank! At 2 pm meet the Keepers at Pelican Cove to hear all things pelican and see if the big birds will go for some fishy snacks.
Plus our collection of ducks, geese and swans and wild reserve is just waiting to be explored, not to mention our play area if the kids have any energy left to burn!
