Wigeon on the move

The main Wigeon flock has relocated from the Dumbles to the Top New Piece

The main Wigeon flock has relocated from the Dumbles scrape to the Top New Piece, best viewed from the Van de Bovenkamp Hide. Amongst them is a returning female with leucistic pluamge on her head.

Willow Hide
The Siberian chiffchaff was still in trees just before the hide this afternoon, calling intermittently and showing well at times. A few chiffchaffs were also calling in Decoy nearby. A Water Rail was under the feeders again this morning

South Lake
An adult Yellow Legged Gull was found this afternoon with the Herring Gull flock. A Lesser Black-backed and Great Black-backed Gull were also on the wader scrape for comparison. This morning found a flock of 58 Black-tailed Godwit on wader scrape with 152 Lapwing, plus the usual Teal, Shoveler and Gadwall.

Zeiss Hide
The juvenile male wing-tagged Marsh Harrier (red I7) flushed the Top New Piece this morning. The large number of Teal eventually settled, as did the carpet of 883 Wigeon towards Van de Bovenkamp Hide. Also noted were 14 Redshank, eight Golden Plover, a Black-tailed Godwit and a small flock of Dunlin. Later this afternoon the Golden Plover flock increased to 97 birds and at least 13 Ruff were in a loose flock feeding on the damp grass. Two Spotted Redshank and two Little Stint were also found.

Kingfisher Hide
A Little Grebe was on the pond this morning and a Chiffchaff was calling from the hedgerow.

Estuary Tower
A quieter morning on the Dumbles with only 33 Wigeon amongst the Teal on scrape. At least 41 White-fronted Geese (nine juveniles) are present today, all spending the day on the Dumbles.

Robbie Garnett Hide
This morning the Tack Piece held 118 Teal, eight Wigeon and two Redshank.

Rushy Hide
Numbers are increasing as our morning feeds have started. This morning found 36 Pochard, 33 Pintail and 42 Tufted Duck plus the usual Mallard and Shelduck.
