WWT birthday season begins

Llanelli is the first of four WWT wetland centres to celebrate a milestone birthday this year – WWT’s 70 anniversary year.

It’s a silver anniversary for Llanelli, who opened their doors 25 years ago. On Sunday they’ll be cutting the birthday cake at 10.30am, followed by a tour of the grounds and a performance of Theatr na nog’s “You should ask Wallace” which celebrates explorers and adventurers including WWT founder Sir Peter Scott.

Later this year, WWT’s newest reserve – Steart Marshes – will celebrate its first official birthday, after being formally opened in 2015. The reserve is a “working wetland” that helps to protect the Severn Estuary from coastal flooding, as well as being a home for wetland wildlife.

Then in November, it will be triple-birthday time. Arundel Wetland Centre will be 40, Slimbridge Wetland Centre will be 70, and WWT itself will celebrate 70 years since it was founded as the Severn Wildfowl Trust in 1946.

Look out for lots of fun WWT and Peter Scott memorabilia coming your way soon. And we’re looking to the future too, check out our Scott Vision 70
