WWT Report and Financial Statements 2012/13
Lottery Fund Round One application for Cockington
Court Lakes, Devon, lake improvements at Longley
Farm, Yorkshire and Chislehurst Common, Kent. We
also undertook a study for Messingham Sands SSSI,
Lincolnshire, commissioned by Natural England, to identify
the sources of the pollution found on site and to present a
series of choices that could be used to mitigate this.
Larger wetland restoration projects include working with the
Environment Agency and WWT to develop plans to improve
the ecological value of the River Swilgate, near Tewkesbury.
We also produced detailed designs for the restoration of
2,000 ha of wetland habitat as part of the Fujin National
Wetland Park Masterplan, China.
WWT Consulting has recently been advising the World Bank
on strategic urban wetland planning in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
This included assessing the current and future threats to
Colombo’s urban wetlands and we proposed a management
approach to ensure their important ecosystem services are
maintained. This has also involved capacity building though
running training workshops for government officials on
wetland management and visitor centre planning to provide
opportunities for wetland restoration and ecotourism.
We are also continuing to work with Royal Holloway,
University of London, on an EU funded project to
develop community owned best practice for sustainable
resource adaptive management across the Guyana Shield,
South America.
WWT Consulting continues to work on a diverse range
of WTS and sustainable drainage projects, designing
systems to treat different effluents, manage drainage and
improve water quality for schools, universities, breweries
and dairy farms. A number of feasibility and detailed
designs were carried out for a range of projects such
as WTS for a composting unit at University of Bristol, for
Ramsbury Brewery, for Grahams Dairy and for a suite of
WTS at 10 hotel lodges across the Masai Mara, Kenya
for WWF Kenya. It is hoped that most of these will be
constructed and in full operation over the next six months.
Following on from the successful WWT funding for the
SuDS for Schools project the consultancy carried out
feasibility and detailed design for 10 schools, which are
being delivered by the Wetland Conservation Department.
Work continues, with the Wetland Conservation
Department, to collect water quality data from the WTS
at Abraham Guest School and the Shaw Forest Park
landfill to build a performance dataset and assess the
ability of different plant species to strip out the diverse
range of pollutants.
