Big Bird Challenge Final Update
And the results are in!
The end of January saw our reserve staff’s Big Bird Challenge wrap up, where our placement students were put against the wardens in a competition to see which team could spot the most birds in the first month of 2023. The teams drew at a very respectable 78 species each with a total of 84 seen between them (see the full list below).
Despite being disappointed there wasn’t an outright winner (some of them are very competitive!), the reserve staff were delighted by the number and variety of species they spotted. It really reinforced for them that by protecting this wetland, we have created a safe place for these birds to thrive. More than anything that is what the Big Bird Challenge has taught us: the birdscape at Caerlaverock is wonderfully diverse.
