Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

Wetland Word of the Week 3

Our Wetland Word of the Week for week 3 is...

... dabchick which is another name for little grebe. It's name comes from the word 'dap' which means to dip lightly or suddenly under water. Dabchicks are known for their fantastic diving, clumsy walking on land and nesting on floating platforms of waterweeds.

A good spot for dabchicks at Caerlaverock is at the Back Pond Hide where you can watch them hunting for their fishy prey.
