Birds are queued for bling at Castle Espie

Castle Espie is offering a unique opportunity to witness some of the wonderful work the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust  do; so join our expert wardens in the Duckery as they ring our captive stock of birds which will include 20 different species from Mandarin, Carolina, White-faced Whistling ducks plus some of our endangered species such as White headed ducks to Baikal Teal duck. Get close to the action and watch as they put on their identity rings which stay with the birds for the rest of their life, a bit like a wedding ring! Thinenes process also helps us do a health check on the birds as they don’t like to be handled on a regular bases. The event takes place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September at 2pm and 3pm and booking is essential.

Another few not to be missed events include; the ‘Brent our Back’ - this is the time of the year when 90% of the world’s population of Light- bellied Brent Geese comes to Northern Ireland with Strangford Lough being their favorite staging post… Our friendly guide will bring you on a brent journey and explain the life cycle of these wonderful birds from what they eat to where they migrate to. The event takes every weekend at 12 noon and 2pm during the month of October.

Finally join us for our popular tick & twitch event - a fun competition to win a free family pass to Castle Espie (2 adults and 2 children). Simply turn up, collect your bird spotting sheets from reception, and head out around our grounds to try and tick off as many of the 20 birds you can find. Great fun for all, including those who don’t know their Starlings from their Cormorants. Event takes place on Saturday 5 October and Sunday 6 October.

Events are included in the cost of admission and free to WWT members.
