Medieval Merriment with Robin Hood

Robin Hood at Castle Espie
Robin Hood in the Wood returns on Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 August.

Join the world's most famous outlaw - Robin Hood and dress up as one of his merry mob for a weekend of medieval merriment at WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August between 11am and 4pm.

Visitors can meet Robin Hood and step back in time to experience medieval life with a packed programme of demonstrations and interactive activities. Outlaw activities include historical crafts and games such as bow and arrow making in the woodland workshop, horseshoe throwing or a game of tug of war at Stone Henge, whilst in the ancient roundhouse a storyteller will bring medieval tales to life.

There’s a BBQ feast in the courtyard with period music, face painting and the chance to make medieval memorabilia at the shield and crown arts and crafts sessions. Activities also include a static falconry display, archery, a hunt for King John’s treasure on a woodland trail, pony rides out on the reserve and spot prizes for the best dressed merry man or lady.

John McCullough, Learning Manager at WWT Castle Espie said:

“We constantly strive to find new ways of sharing the wonder of nature with regular and new visitors to Castle Espie and the story of Robin Hood is ideal. According to legend, he hid in the forest amongst nature to avoid the Sheriff of Nottingham and his not so merry men.

Last year’s event was a tremendous success and this year we have another packed programme of fun and exciting themed activities that will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy our wetlands and woodlands, experience medieval past times and celebrate the most famous outlaw – Robin Hood.”

The event is included in the cost of admission and free to WWT members. For a full event programme including timings for individual activities go to wwt.org.uk/castleespie, or alternatively contact Castle Espie on 028 9187 4146. WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre is open every day from 10am to 5.00pm and parking is free of charge.
