Trapping moths with Ross and Karoline

Every Monday, Ross and Karoline from our reserve team record the numbers of moths caught in a specialist trap at Castle Espie Wetland Centre.

The trap is set out on Sunday evening and offers the moths (plus other species), a safe and warm place to spend the night. Summer is the best time of the year to trap moths in this way, due to the warm and humid weather.

I spent time with the team this week, as they recorded what was caught. These included several Lunar Thorns, Poplar Hawk moths (see image below), Gold Spots and even a few rare micro-moths.

As each species is recorded, it is safely released back into the reserve.

If you would like to find out more about some of the species of moths found at Castle Espie and try your hand at using a moth catcher, come along to our Moth Morning event on Sunday 12 August at 9.30am.

You can also watch a short video of Ross and Karoline using the moth trap on our Facebook page @WWTCastleEspie
