Another wild one weather wise today, thankfully the forecast for the next few days is looking much more sensible with dropping winds and no rain showers closer to the weekend. No seabirds reported today (again), however in recent years we have had wind blown Little Gull and Kittiwake in the later half of the winter period.

At least 20 Barnacle Geese feeding on Plover Field late afternoon with Greylag and Pink-feet. Plover Field has also been playing host to 2000+ Lapwing and ~ 70 Ruff. Yesterday a count of 4350 Lapwing was the largest we have had for sometime, undoubtedly helped by windy condition pushing costal birds inland.

At least 2 Marsh Harrier up and about in between the squalls.

Big numbers of Eurasian Teal and Eurasian Wigeon. There has been American Wigeon seen locally in the last week so keep an eye out for that.

Also a Brambling was seen yesterday, a good addition to the year list, as it has been a quiet winter for this species.

In 2011 we finished with a total of 156 species of wild bird, compared to 151 in 2010. If we get a chance this year we will attempt to collate year lists for all previous years on the reserve. For anyone keeping a note on these things we recorded 86 species in January 2010 and 82 in January 2011.
