Avocet Influx continues
Another cracking day. Probably being spoilt with this weather but lets not complain! Out on the Reed Bed Walk and near the Janet Kear Hide the first Brimestone Butterflies of the year. Folklore has it that butterflies are named 'butter'-'flies' because of the yellow Brimstone.
A doubling of the Avocet overnight now with 32 on the reserve mostly from the Ron Barker Hide. Still 1000+ Lapwing, 40+ Ruff and increasing Oystercatcher 78 and 19 Black-tailed Godwit.
Two Chiffchaff by the Sewage Works probably over wintered, a good spot for this species.
The usual raptors with active Buzzards, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk around. Three Tawny Owl and at least one Barn Owl.
Wildfowl include Shelduck, Mallard, Pintail, Teal, Wigeon, Gadwall, Shoveler, Pochard, Tufted and Goldeneye. At least 150 Whooper Swan present throughout the day.
A Stoat in partial ermine was seen from the UU Hide this morning. Another similar animal has been seen near the Ron Barker Hide recently.
