First Wheatear of the Year
Barely a cloud in the sky but a chilly wind in the hides. The exodus of wildfowl continues although it is still possible to see the vast majority of wintering species in smaller numbers.
The first Wheatear of the year seen by the wardens on Outer Vinson's, not viewable from the hides at the initial sighting.
A walk along the outer perimeter footpath pays dividends at the moment with Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer and Grey Partridge all being seen. the field margin either side of the public footpath leading the the Railway Crossing being particularly fruitful.
Two pairs of Mediterranean Gull now regularly on the Mere with Black-headed Gulls.
Waders present include Lapwing (now starting to nest), Redshank, Avocet (80+), Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Snipe, Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit (featured image), with the later showing very well at times from the Discovery Hide.
At least 5 Chiffchaff singing on the reserve and 3 Cetti's Warbler.
Recent raptor sightings; 5+ Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, 2 Sparrowhawk and Marsh Harrier.
For first time visitors the Kingfisher Hide is good for seeing Tree Sparrow. Stock Dove are also present on site.
We are now moving into the period when Osprey, Garganey and Little Ringed Plover can turn up.
You can easily see 60+ species on the reserve in a full days birdwatching. If you like to know where specific species are best seen or have seen something interesting do call in at trhe in focus shop, next to the Discovery Hide.
