Latest Sightings
We are in full peak autumn mode at the moment with the Mere packed with birds. Recent waste potato deliveries on Top Mere has produced some excellent viewing of Pink-footed Geese and Whooper Swan.
All of the duck species are well on the way to moulting out of their eclipse plumage, making them easier to identify for those getting to grips with bird identification.
Good for raptors with 2 Merlin, Peregrine, 3+ Marsh Harrier, 4+ Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk. Last winter we had regular Hen Harrier around.
Snipe numbers are holding up as we have had no substantial frosts, certainly over 100 birds present. Other waders exclude 600+ Lapwing, 20+ Ruff, Green Sandpiper and a few Black-tailed Godwit.
Bearded Tits were heard on the Reed Bed Walk again.
Kingfisher(s) again from the Ron Barker Hide.
Willow Tit and Nuthatch visiting the feeders at the Janet Kear Hide.
Barn Owl and Tawny Owl can also be seen.
Water Rails and Cetti's Warblers calling on the Reed Bed.
A few small flocks of Fieldfare and a few Redwing moving today.
Site specialities, Tree Sparrow and Stock Dove always present.
