Latest Sightings

Martin Mere is the perfect day out during Easter Weekend, with lots of activities on offer and plenty of wildlife to see.

This week, we have seen numerous Swallows around the reserve. You can see them swooping through the air over the Mere, the café lake and Vinson's lake at Ron Barker hide.

The reserve team have been checking nest boxes today and discovered that Blue Tits and Great Tits have been successfully laying eggs. You can often see Goldfinch on the nature trail feeders.

At Ron Barker hide, 8 Wheatear were spotted today and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker was heard. You may also catch a glimpse of the Barn Owl and Kingfisher here.

On the Reedbed Walk, where the Bittern has been heard 'booming', we have had reports of Grasshopper Warbler, Reed Warbler, Willow Warbler and Cetti's Warbler. A Sedge Warbler was heard today in the playground area.

Marsh Harrier, Stonechat, Teal, Gadwall, Pochard, Snipe, Little Grebe and Great Crested Grebe can also be viewed from Harrier Hide, overlooking the Reedbeds.

A large number of Shoveler are visible on Woodend Marsh, alongside waders like Avocet, Redshank, Little Ringed Plover and Ruff. United Utilities hide provides an excellent view for birdwatching, where you can observe waterfowl performing courtship behaviour. You can get a closer look from Gordon Taylor and Rees hides, and at Tomlinson hide where 2 Whinchat were seen today. Keep an eye out for Grey Heron as 4 were counted yesterday.

On the Mere, 1 Common Sandpiper is currently visible very close to Discovery hide and 3 Curlew have been spotted.

4 Oystercatcher, 8 Pink-Footed Geese, 1 Whooper Swan, Black-Tailed Godwits, Lapwing, Shelduck, Cormorants, Wigeon, Mallards and Black-Headed Gulls have also been observed.
