Latest Sightings
A compilation of sightings from the last few days. Early days for classic spring migrants although a couple of Chiffchaff have been seen, these birds are likely to have over wintered.
Four Great White Egret on the reserve on Monday, breaking the previous record of 3 set on the 1st March!
Two Hen Harrier seen over the weekend, a ring-tail and an adult male. Also seen, 2 Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 4 Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Barn Owls have been out and about and Tawny Owl can be seen roosting.
Waders included 16 Curlew (briefly), 95 Avocet, 99 Black-tailed Godwit, 59 Ruff, 120 Lapwing, 104 Oystercatcher.
Two Great-crested Grebe from the Harrier Hide.
Med Gull seen daily. Around 900 Black-headed Gulls.
Wildfowl numbers are dropping back although smaller numbers of all the wintering species can still be seen including the magnificent Pintail (picture below by Charlie Lowe). Counts included 421 Whooper Swan, 1220 Pink-footed Geese (roosting), 128 Greylag, 458 Shelduck, 473 Teal, 301 Wigeon, 115 Pintail, 27 Shoveler, 43 Pochard, 33 Tufted Duck. The Tundra Bean Goose was again present today.
