Med Gull and other birds

Another pleasant day in the sun, if a little chilly out of it! As with most places in Lancashire we are leaving March without seeing a Sand Martin for the first time since the reserve opened over 30 years ago.

A second summer Med Gull spent a few hours with Black-headed Gulls on the Mere. A Little Egret flew through the reserve around midday.

At least 30 Avocet on the reserve, 4+ Redshank, 2+ Ringed Plover, Dunlin, 10+ Black-tailed Godwit, Common Snipe, ~200 Lapwing, 20+ Oystercatcher and 40+ Ruff.

At least 1500 Pink-footed Geese came in mid-morning.

Raptors included Peregrine, 5 Common Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. Raven again feeding on carrion around the reserve.

Winter thrushes are still present with a few each of Redwing and Fieldfare. Great-spotted Woodpecker showing well from the Janet Kear Hide. Treecreeper near the Beaver Enclosure. Stoat performing down the track between the Ron Barker and Kingfisher Hides.
