Mega Moth Night
The hot and humid night forecast meant that running a couple of moth traps was a must. At the time of typing we have identified 100 species from the overnight session. Beautiful Hook-tip (featured image) is a second record for the reserve and scarce in Lancashire.
Below- Stathmopoda pedella is a Martin Mere speciality and is only recorded in one other spot in the North West.
One the bird news front the Black-tailed Godwit have increased to 1200, not far off a record for the reserve. The water levels are now being dropped on the Mere so there is a good chance we will be treated to some spectacular views of these birds flying in to feed in the next week or so.
Other waders include Spotted Redshank, 4 Green Sandpiper, 5+ Ruff.
Marsh Harrier, 3 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.
The Common Terns are active around the Mere, very vocal.
