Pectoral Sandpiper

A good start to the day with a Pectoral Sandpiper found on Woodend Marsh. Martin Mere has had quite a few spring 'Pecs' over the years although generally they are pretty much annual autumn birds. (Below Pectoral Sandpiper with Redshank)

Two new wader species for the year when a Bar-tailed Godwit found on Vinson's early afternoon. Bar-tailed is rarer at Martin Mere than the Pec Sand! Whimbrel dropping in again with at least 19 birds involved. At least 4 Little Ringed Plover on site.

An adult Little Gull (new for the year) flew came in mid afternoon. Always a pleasure to see this insect hawking diminutive gull.

Male Whinchat still present this morning along the fence line at the back of the Mere. Nine Wheatear in Langley's Fields also indicate that new birds have been arriving. Corn Bunting (below) and many Skylark present in that area.

Three Drake Garganey still present mostly from the Ron Barker Hide.

Grasshopper Warbler reeling out on Woodend Marsh. Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Whitethroat, Reed Warbler and Sedge Warbler (below) all in song.

Cuckoo calling on the Reed Bed. Pair of Med Gull roving around.

See previous few days for a fuller picture as to what can be seen on the reserve. Currently we are recording over 80 species a day.
