Sunday's Sightings
Jammed packed with birds this morning. A roost count produced 4350 Pink-footed Geese with many birds hanging on to feed on the waste potatoes. Over 200 Whooper Swan present in the area with new arrivals showing head staining and some new family groups arriving.
A count of 101 Shoveler on the Mere is good compared to last years unusually low counts on the reserve. Big numbers of Teal present 3000+ and building numbers of Wigeon, Pintail, Shelduck, Gadwall, Pochard and Tufted Duck.
A single Barnacle Goose was with Pink-footed Geese on Plover Field early afternoon.
Around 500 Lapwing present, 12 Ruff, 30+ Snipe (probably a lot more), 3 Avocet, a few Black-tailed Godwit and on Friday Greenshank and Green Sandpiper.
Merlin seen today, at least 5 Marsh Harrier, 4+ Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Peregrine.
Willow Tit from the Janet Kear Hide. Kingfisher on the Reed Bed Walk, also 4+ Cetti's Warbler calling there.
Three Roe Deer being regularly seen, also Stoat, Bank Vole and Brown Hare.
Migrant Hawker, Common Darter and Red Admiral all on the wing still.
