Too Sunny?
With autumn migration now in full swing there is a question that regularly pops up in conversations, 'is the weather too nice?' Well there is always a fine balance between wind/lashing rain and wall to wall windless sunshine and currently we are getting a little too much of the later and not enough of the former to drop in birds migrating through Britain.
Not to worry, Pink-footed Geese are still turning up with 3000+ using the reserve during the day and more roosting, including a satellite tagged individual numbered '12'.
Excellent numbers of Snipe with at least 150 present, probably more. Other waders include 700+ Lapwing, 3 Green Sandpiper, 10 Ruff, 5+ Black-tailed Godwit and a single Dunlin.
Bearded Reedling were heard just left of the Harrier Hide around midday. Cetti's Warbler also there.
Willow Tit seen from the Janet Kear Hide. Chiffchaffs contact calling around the reserve. Do check out any Long-tailed Tit flocks for other migrant warblers.
Great to hear Skylark moving over the reserve this morning, a classic autumn sound.
