Weekend Sightings
Six species of raptor this weekend. A ring-tail Hen Harrier was seen on the reserve earlier afternoon. At least 3 Marsh Harrier but more roaming the area. Also present 1st calendar year Peregrine, 2 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel and 4+ Buzzard (pic below), the later showing well at times.
The Mere has been packed with wildfowl as usual and a few more Whooper Swan have been present throughout the day. Waste potatoes brought in by local farmer and left on Top Mere are an attraction of many species including Pink-footed Geese. Interesting to see some high flocks coming in from the South, possibly birds returning from Norfolk.
The local Swan Goose (see below) flew in with a mixed flock of Greylag and Pink-footed Geese midafternoon.
The usual waders;700+ Lapwing, 60+ Ruff, a few Black-tailed Godwit and Snipe. Also an over wintering Green Sandpiper.
Willow Tit regular at the Janet Kear Hide. Plenty of finches and tits coming to the feeders there.
Kingfisher seen along Langley's Brook.
Currently it's possible to see 60+ species on the reserve in a days birding.
