Barn Owl & Harriers


A Barn Owl was out this morning in the Top mere area best viewed from Ron barker Hide, also 2 Marsh Harrier showing well.

Yesterday at least 1 Wood Sandpiper present in Langley's Brook also Common Sandpiper and 2 Green Sandpiper here. Still good numbers of Black-tailed Godwits present with 1400 - 2000 being estimated today.

Tufted Duck family still on the Mere with several young, also Pochard, growing numbers of Mallard and still the odd Shelduck around though most are away on their moult migration.

Fantastic numbers of Painted Lady butterflies around the site in what is one of the best years for a long time for this attractive insect. Other butterflies recorded on site today include Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Peacock, Large White, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood, Brimstone, Comma, Wall, Small Copper and Small Tortoiseshell.

Still a few sightings of Southern Hawker in recent days, look for them hawking along the shaded paths anywhere on site and occasionally seen resting on the fence of the collection between In Focus and Gladstone Hide. Also Emperor Dragonfly, Common Darter and the fabulous Banded Demoiselle (picture below by Charlie Lowe) seen from Ron Barker Hide
