Grasshopper Warbler

Another frosty start and plenty of sunshine. A Grasshopper Warbler was heard reeling on the Reed Bed between the second platform and the Sewage Works, an early record here. At least two Bearded Tit on the Reed Bed again this morning.

Common Sandpiper on the Mere. At least 3 Little Ringed Plover, 60+ Black-tailed Godwit, 80+ Avocet, 17 Ruff, 10 Oystercatcher including one pair sitting on eggs (see below), 4+ Redshank, Ringed Plover.


Corn Bunting (8+), Grey Partridge (pair), Skylarks. Meadow Pipit and active Brown Hare on the fields beyond Long Hedge and the Railway Crossing.

Ringtail Hen Harrier again today. An extend run into spring time for this species. Usual raptors with 3+ Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.


Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and Blackcap all in song around the reserve. At least 3 Cetti's Warbler calling out on the Reed Bed and it's likely that Sedge Warbler will still be present and increasing in number. Pair of Great-crested Grebe from the Harrier Hide.


Out on the perimeter path adjacent to the Canoe Safari, Mistle Thrush (below) and 10+ Fieldfare. also Mistle Thrush and Song Thrush in the overflow car park early on. Bullfinch also along the outer path.

A male Stonechat on Outer Sunley's was the first for a month and an obvious migrating bird. A big influx of Swallow today and Sand Martin.

Tree Sparrow around the Kingfisher Hide and Stock Dove between there and the Raines Observatory.

On the wildfowl front 50+ Shoveler, 10+ Gadwall, 100+ Shelduck. Small numbers of Wigeon, Teal, Pochard and Tufted Duck.

You can easily see 60+ species currently on and around the reserve. If you are visiting for the first time call in at the in focus shop next to the Discovery Hide for all the up to date info and to report any sightings or counts.
