Last sightings report for 2017

As the sun sets on 2017 we wish you all a happy new year and great birding for 2018. We'll do a review next week, covering some of the many highlights of 2017.

The Cattle Egret is still present viewed from the Ron Barker Hide.

At least 1400+ Whooper Swan roosting on the reserve. At least 4000 Pink-footed Geese roosting and more reports of birds heading west from the Norfolk wintering grounds, yes spring is on the way!

Other wildfowl counts included; 570 Greylag, 10 Canada Geese, 2300+ Mallard, c1000 Shelduck, 4000+ Teal, 800+ Wigeon, c500 Pintail, 40+ Gadwall, 10+ Shoveler, 2o+ Pochard, 30+ Tufted Duck, 3 Goldeneye.

Good for raptors with 5+ Buzzard, 3+ Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 3 Kestrel, 2 Sparrowhawk.

Waders 700+ Lapwing, 80+ Ruff, 20+ Black-tailed Godwit, 20 Snipe, 2 Redshank, Golden Plover and an Oystercatcher.

Other reports include the long staying female Brambling at the Kingfisher Hide feeder.

If you are visiting Martin Mere for the first time and would like to know what is around and the best areas to see specific species do call in at the in focus shop, next to the Discovery Hide which over looks the Mere. It should be possible to see over 60 species in a day without too much difficulty.
