Latest sightings

The first Shelduck ducklings have hatched infront of Ron Barker hide this weekend. A family of 9 ducklings (stockphoto). A few broods of mallards on the reserve and in the grounds. Lots of Canada and Greylag gosling's.

Woodend marsh has lots of mud which is attracting migrant waders including black-tailed godwits, ruff, dunlin and ringed plovers. There are some huge lapwing chicks (about 12 days old) on woodend marsh, hopefully they will fledge. There are some smaller lapwing chicks also on woodend and some broods on plover field.

Lots of swallows feeding on the mere with the sand martins.

We have 3 pairs of common tern again this year, 2 pairs on the mere and 1 pair on woodend marsh.

Lot of mammal sightings, otter and cub seen on Langleys Brook on our trail camera. Lots of hares and leverets running about the fields. Roe deer does and bucks often in with our longhorn cattle. Stoats often seen on woodend marsh.

The dragonflies and damselflies are out along the nature trail and in the grounds, including, large red damselfly, banded damoiselle, four-spotted chaser and azure damselfly.


The grounds, the nature reserve and all hides and paths are closed at WWT Martin Mere, following government guidance on Covid-19. A small team of essential staff is working on site looking after the animals and completing essential tasks on the reserve. Please do not attempt to visit the site as you will be putting our staff and yourself at risk.
