Latest sightings

The long-billed dowitcher is still showing well at the back of the mere. It is mainly on its own or with the lapwing but not following the black-tailed godwits around like usual. Also on the mere 500 lapwing, dunlin, 12 ruff, common sandpipers, green sandpipers and 50 black-tailed godwits.

We checked the barn owl boxes to see what might fledge as the chicks should be 9-11 weeks old now. Unfortunately one box the chick have died possibly one of the adults may have gone missing so they weren't getting enough food or the adults could have been young and inexperienced, they did have 7 chicks in one of the previous checks. But great news on the other 2 boxes there were 5 very healthy chicks between them (photo of the largest chick which should be fledgling soon).

Still lots of signs of otters on the reserve from the trail camera footage we think we have at least 4 individuals, we had a great sighting of a huge dog otter run from the ditch to the mere this week!!
