More Med Gulls

More Mediterranean Gulls on the Mere with at least 5 birds today, 2 pair of adults and a 1st sum/2nd cal year. One pair were actively looking around for nesting sites among the Black-headed gull colony, were there are lots of young Black-headed Gulls from newly hatched chicks through to just fledged juveniles taking to the wing on their first flight.

The two pairs of nesting Common Terns which are nesting for the first time on the Mere are doing well, one pair now feeding 3 chicks and the other pair are still sitting.

A female Pintail was on the Mere, a few Wigeon on Woodend Marsh and plenty of Gadwall around the reserve.

A Cuckoo was seen in flight from Ron Barker Hide this morning.

On the Mere there are at least 9 Avocet chicks of various sizes possibly more.

The Moorhen nest in front of Discovery Hide continues to entertain, recently another female Moorhen has been sitting on the nest much to the annoyance of the pair, although they now seem to be accepting help from this third bird, in terms of accepting nest material that the third bird can be seen bringing in from time to time. At times recently the owners of the nest could be seen returning only to find the third bird sitting on it, which resulted in a furious pecking until she got off the nest!

Yesterday there were 5 Teal on the Mere early morning, while on the Reedbed walk 2 Little Grebe, 2 juv Great crested Grebe, female Pochard with 3 ducklings plus 8 male Pochard.
