Ruff returns

Fresher today after the humidity of Saturday. The wader action is hotting up already and it's not even July yet. Traditional birding wisdom is that June and July are quiet months but the waders can always be interesting and 2017 July curve ball in the shape of Lancashire's fourth Gull-billed Tern shows that anything could happen, ideally a Caspian Tern next...

The first Ruff returned a black male still retaining it's breeding plumage. Martin Mere is a hot spot for Ruff and the best place in the North West to catch one in breeding plumage in the next couple of weeks.

At least 220 Black-tailed Godwit in today, 4 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover and plenty of Avocet, Oystercatcher and Lapwing.

Common Terns on the Mere. A juvenile Med Gull was seen from the Ron Barker Hide this morning, presumably bred locally.

A Peregrine put in an appearance today.
