Storm Ciara
The reserve is open again this still windy Monday morning after yesterday's closure. Sustained gusts above 55 mph forced the reserve to close for safety reasons although not too many people were out and about. No real damage on the reserve but a tree did fall across the access road to the reserve entrance.
The Avocet count has increased to 6 birds, currently sheltering on the edge of the Mere.At least 55 Oystercatcher now on the reserve.The usual Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit present, some showing early signs of colouring up. Snipe also can be seen around the reserve.
Substantial willow scrub clearance around Vinson's and Sunley's Marsh in the past week should make for better habitat for breeding, feeding and roosting birds.
On Friday 2 European White-front came in with Pink-footed Geese. The Tundra Bean Goose is still present today reliably seen around the Mere.
Duck numbers are dropping back relatively small numbers of Teal for this time of year. All the main species can still be seen including, Shelduck, Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwall, Pochard, Tufted Duck and Mallard.
The usual raptors; Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Buzzard(s), Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.
