Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

First Whoopers!

The first Whooper Swans of the season have returned to Caerlaverock!! So far only in small numbers with 6 birds having been observed. No sign of any leg rings yet to identify them though two of the birds seem quite settled on the Whooper Pond and appear to be used to the routines on the reserve. The northerly winds the past couple of days have definitely helped give them a push from Iceland (recommend wrapping up warm if you are visiting as those same winds are quite bracing!) Whooper Pond is looking quite good at the moment with duck numbers increasing. Mallard, Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler and the first Tufted ducks were all counted this morning. A Little Grebe is also making using of the plentiful supplies of Sticklebacks in the Pond. The ringtail Hen Harrier was seen yesterday hunting over the Meadow area.

The Pasture Pathway, Meadow and River Walks are now all closed for the season.

High Tide: 08:43, 7.4m

Opening times:
10am - 4pm
Last entry 3pm
