Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

Wet meadows

The heavy downpours have left the grasslands rather soggy, so best to wear boots or wellies for a little while just until the puddles can drain away. The wet grassland isn't a bad thing for wildlife as it brings new feeding opportunities for many species. The Swallows and House Martins especially are loving it this morning. During the sunny weather yesterday the River Walk was buzzing with newly emerged Peacock butterflies looking resplendent. The number of them should have come as no surprise seeing as we were encountering significant numbers of their caterpillars on the banks of nettles around the reserve just last month.
